What is the Chicago Collections Consortium?

Chicago Collections is a group of Chicago area cultural organizations, libraries, and universities dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history and culture of the Chicago region. Our member institutions work collaboratively to promote access to our collections through the Explore page.

What can I find on the Explore Chicago Collections page?

Explore Chicago Collections provides access to both Chicago-related digitized images and collection descriptions related to the Chicago area provided by the CCC's member institutions. It is a tool intended to guide users to the collections that hold material relevant to their research. To begin finding materials, search by keyword, name, or topic; you can also browse using the links beneath the search bar to find material related to a specific geographic area or subject.

Where do I go to see materials in person?

Materials are held by various member institutions throughout the Chicago area. Each collection description and digital image shows the contributing institution at the top right of the page underneath the title. Descriptions of digital images are provided beneath the image and includes more information about the collection the image belongs to and where it is held.

How do I obtain copies of images that I find through your website?

Each of the Chicago Collections Consortium member institutions has different policies and fees associated with providing digital and physical copies of images and you'll need to contact the holding institution directly. The library or archive that holds the image or collection will be listed at the top right of the page; clicking on their logo will direct you to a page with the institution's contact information.

I didn't find what I'm looking for, where do I find collections related to ___?

Explore Chicago Collections provides access to material related to Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, it is not representative of everything that is available from its contributing members. Not all Chicago cultural and academic institutions are participating members of the consortium; to access their holdings you will need to contact those organizations directly. If you have questions about your Chicago-related research, please contact us.
